A new final resting place. Argentine justice authorized, Tuesday, October 2, the transfer of the body of Diego Maradona, who died in 2020, to a future mausoleum wanted by his children, in a central district of Buenos Aires, to facilitate future tributes “to the greatest idol of Argentina”. The decision was announced in a resolution from the San Isidro court cited by several Argentine media.

The decision comes on the eve of a first trial of a nurse member of Maradona’s medical team into the causes of his death. Gisela Madrid claims to have only followed the doctors’ instructions and had obtained a separate judgement. The main trial of seven practitioners – a neurosurgeon and attending physician, a clinical doctor, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a head nurse and nurses – is scheduled for March 2025.

Regarding the remains,The court initially decided, in May, not to authorize the transfer, arguing “possible measures which may be required”exhumation in particular, as part of the trial, after objection from certain parties. The court noted Tuesday that there is no longer “of opposition from any party” and considers that a “favorable response must be given” for the sake of children.

The idea, launched a year after Maradona’s death and formalized in 2023, is to transfer the remains of the Argentine football icon, which rests in a private cemetery in Bella Vista in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, to the central district and ancient port of Puerto Madero.
