A new initiative has taken shape in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel to save endangered seals. An association collects baby seals cut off from their environment.

On the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, children hold their breath before seeing two baby seals about to regain their freedom. The boxes of Lucky and Vanda, the young seals, are then opened, and everyone can head towards the sea. Lucky sinks and disappears. Vanda, for her part, returns to the beach, in particular to the caregivers who took care of her when she was found abandoned in July 2024: “We’ve been raising her for three months and she doesn’t know the sea at all, it can be impressive”says a caregiver.

The two young seals should not have left the sea. The fault lies with tourists who got too close to them. On a video, it is possible to see that the animals panic as tourists approach. The seals jump into the water, leaving the hatchlings who cannot follow the movement. An association then takes care of collecting them until the seals are large enough to return to their natural habitat.
