Bruno Retailleau tries to put an end to the controversy. The Minister of the Interior regretted “false debates” on the rule of law, Tuesday October 1, in a press release. “Of course there cannot be democracy without the rule of law”recalls number 4 of the government.“This is the foundation of our Republic.” But he “We have to face reality”, adds the first cop in France: “Today, the law does not sufficiently protect the French.”

“The rule of law is not intangible or sacred”Bruno Retailleau declared this weekend at JDD. “The source of the rule of law is democracy, it is the sovereign people”he added. Words which widely provoked a reaction from the political class. The President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, recalled that the rule of law “protect our democracy”. Some deputies, like Erwan Balanant (MoDem), had even called Michel Barnier to “reframe” the Minister of the Interior.
The world of justice was also concerned by this declaration. “This is nonsense”tackled Kim Reuflet, the president of the Magistrates’ Union. “He’s not the first to make this type of absolutely frightening statement.” Rémy Heitz, attorney general at the Court of Cassation, also commented on Bruno Retailleau’s comments. “If there is something that should be intangible and sacred, it is precisely the rule of law”estimated the magistrate.
