At this location is Civita di Bagnoregio, a small, difficult-to-access medieval town located at the top of a rocky peak overlooking an immense valley.
In appearance, it is a small village like there are thousands in Italy. However, it is a geological exception. Perched at an altitude of 400 meters, it is built on the side of a cliff. It overlooks the calanques valley, an immense natural clay quarry. An isolated city accessible by a single bridge 366 meters long. In the early morning, the only delivery man in the village gets ready; he must make around twenty round trips in a day with a small all-terrain truck. Thanks to this vehicle, the village is supplied daily.
Every day, 600 to 700 tourists flock to the small village via the bridge: “The climb is worth it” explains a tourist. Among them, many Asians. Indeed, the city is said to have inspired the famous director Hayao Miyazaki for his film, The Castle in the Sky. Long nicknamed the dying city, Civita di Bagnoregio today seems eternal.
