La Poste: postal services threatened in small towns
In small rural communities, the disappearance of public services is often catastrophic. In recent years, La Poste has compensated by creating postal agencies bringing together several services, notably with the help of the State. This aid will be cut by 50 million euros this year.

In small rural communities, the disappearance of public services is often catastrophic. In recent years, La Poste has compensated by creating postal agencies bringing together several services, notably with the help of the State. This aid will be cut by 50 million euros this year.
In a village in Gironde, to post a letter or drop off a package, residents must go to the town hall. Behind reception, a municipal employee receives the mail: “It’s important because we have nothing else and otherwise we would have to travel 15 kilometers to get to the first point at La Poste”. To maintain this service, La Poste pays the town hall half of the employee’s annual salary. But can this continue? Because from this year, the State plans to reduce the budget by 50 million euros out of 174 million euros.
Businesses also fear a negative impact on their activities. A concern that also extends to villages where there is a real post office, as in another commune in Vienne. It has 2,800 inhabitants for a single post office compared to four previously.
