A mechanic dies at the Éléonore mine site

A 24-year-old mechanic was killed by a piece of equipment on Sunday at the Éléonore mine, according to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).


The police received a call around 7:15 p.m., as an employee had been seriously injured on the site of the Éléonore gold mine, in Nord-du-Québec. According to information from Cogeco Nouvelles, a piece of equipment crushed the employee.

The young mechanic was pronounced dead on site.

Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec and inspectors from the Commission for Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) are on the scene to shed light on the events.

The northernmost mine in Quebec, the Éléonore mine is located 350 km north of Matagami and is owned by Newmont, the largest gold producer on the planet.
