The increase in taxes on the wealthiest classes planned by the government to fill state coffers is not unanimous. Meeting with comfortably retired Toulouse residents, who each have their own opinion.

In the historic heart of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), it is a place where tourists, students and residents with higher than average incomes meet. At a table, three retired friends discuss rising taxes: “Are you for or against?”asks one of them. With their comfortable retirement, the three men could be affected by the upcoming increase.

Jean-Paul worked in real estate, he is opposed to it: “Let our leaders set an example for us by saving money themselves”he believes. “Then we will see if it is necessary to follow, but I think that when they have made a big effort themselves, that will be enough”he adds.

His friend Robert, a former soldier, is not opposed to a little extra effort each month. Christiane, for her part, fears changing her tax bracket if the government changes the rules. “If it’s to help people in need, I’ll do it.”says a young woman of 26, employed in a nearby café.
