After Mexico and Cuba, Hurricane Helene is heading towards Florida on Thursday September 26. Several thousand residents have already been evacuated.

In Florida, the wind is already blowing at 140 km/h on certain coasts, Thursday September 26. These are the beginnings of the hurricane which is expected to strike during the night from Friday to Saturday. As a precaution, the governor demanded total evacuation in two counties. Sixty retirement homes and hospitals were emptied of their occupants. Across the region, residents are organizing with flood barriers and sandbags to seal off stores. They protect the windows with boards. As it approached the American coast, Helene became a “major” hurricane, the US Hurricane Center (NHC).

Hurricane Helene could be “catastrophic and murderous” according to the authorities. Residents stock up on supplies and buy fuel and drinking water. Many express their weariness, because Florida is often hit by hurricanes. “As soon as you clean up the remains of a storm, six or eight months later, we get hit again.”explains a man. Before Florida, Helene swept across Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and the island of Cuba.
