Should we separate the work from the artist? Where, in the case of film Abbé Pierre: a life of struggles, by Frédéric Tellier, should we separate the work… from its subject? This film released in 2023 said nothing about the accusations against Abbé Pierre, in recent months, its future on television is now uncertain. France Télévisions acquired the rights for two broadcasts, starting in February 2025, for 1.2 million euros. Several options: give up broadcasting it, not schedule it in prime time, or put it on the air by contextualizing it, with a debate or a documentary that would follow its broadcast. Another broadcaster: Canal+, which already broadcast it on May 21, as the media chronology allows. Since the first revelations, the biopic has been removed from the MyCanal platform, on which it should have remained for more than six months.

From the decline of an icon, we move to the rebirth of a symbol of cinematic eroticism. While a new adaptation ofEmmanuelle signed by Audrey Diwan is released in theaters, our journalists share their reviews of this modernized version of the novel by Emmanuelle Arsan, whose first adaptation dates back to 1974.

A feminist, political approach, which offers a sharp and critical analysis of the current social context. The journalist Matteu Maestracci speaks of a “very cold, almost clinical production, which shows the solitude of the character, [ainsi que] companies [dans lesquelles nous vivons] depersonalized, even depressing.”

“[Le film] clearly shows what (…) this hyper liberalism is, including for the main characters who are subject to a system.”

However, it seems that this distanced approach to eroticism and the sensual “devitalizes” and creates a certain “boredom” in the viewer. This makes it difficult to understand the motivations of the main character, which seems to have destabilized our journalists, who were unable to identify with him and become attached to him…

A film that divides, leaves you doubtful, but does not leave you indifferent, and that you will be able to find in theaters to form your own opinion, from Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

In the second part of the show, members of the culture service team share their respective recommendations on cultural news.
