The strikes launched by Israel in response to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon are creating a wave of panic. The fear of an escalation is being felt in the Middle East. The risk is indeed there, explains David Rigoulet-Roze, associate researcher at IRIS, in the “18h/20h” of Tuesday, September 24.

Since Monday, September 23, Israel has been raining down strikes on southern Lebanon. Several hundred people have been killed, and thousands more are fleeing to the north, while new attacks have been announced by the Hebrew state. “There is an escalatory risk which is increasingly significant”points out in the “18h/20h” of Tuesday September 24, David Rigoulet-Roze, associate researcher at IRIS and editor-in-chief of the journal Strategic Orients.

“According to the Israeli Defense Minister, the center of gravity has shifted from Gaza in the south to the north”notes the specialist. David Rigoulet-Roze recalls that“between 60 and 70,000” Israelis at the border had to be “displaced by the fire from Hezbollah, which demonstrated its solidarity with Hamas on October 8”.

Therefore, “Today, Israelis believe that the status quo is no longer possible.”the researcher further emphasizes. For Israel, “There is too great a risk of a new October 7, no longer in the south, but in the north”adds David Rigoulet-Roze to explain the Israeli position.
