A woman had already been injured by Asian hornets three days before the death of a 77-year-old hiker on Monday, in the same place, in Pleudihen-sur-Rance (Côtes-d’Armor), France Bleu Armorique revealed on Tuesday, September 24. According to the firefighters, a woman and seven other hikers were attacked by Asian hornets around 10:30 a.m. Monday morning, while they were walking on a path in Pleudihen-sur-Rance. One of the hikers, aged 77, in cardiorespiratory arrest when help arrived, died on the spot.

Three days earlier, last Friday, a first woman had already been stung by Asian hornets and had to be taken to hospital. Around 3 p.m., Laurence had gone for a walk on a small path near her home.

She had first heard “a noise” above his head, then had felt “a big beast“get tangled in her hair and sunglasses.”I was scared, I did everything to chase her away.“But as she chases it away, she feels another insect coming at her.

Laurence then realizes that she is being attacked by several hornets. She protects her head with her hands and screams for help.

“They were following me. I was so abrupt and aggressive in my gestures that, perhaps, it excited them.”

A neighbor, alerted by her screams, calls the firefighters. The victim is taken to the emergency room of Dinan hospital. She is suffering from a “dozens of bites on the head, and also on the shoulders, buttocks, legs, one foot. Despite my jeans, there are even some on more intimate parts. My body itches everywhere and I still have a headache.”

Back home, Laurence posted a message on her village’s private Facebook group to alert her neighbors, but she was unable to contact the town hall.Friday afternoon I was in the emergency room, I couldn’t call the town hall. I tried Saturday morning, but it was closed, I didn’t know it“, she regrets. “I’m sorry. If there had been a sign, the person would not have taken this path.“, laments Laurence.

According to information from France Bleu Armorique, the hornet’s nest at the foot of an oak tree was finally reported to the town hall, but only on Monday morning, when the group of hikers was setting off on the small path.
