Dematerialized Vitale Card: the success of the application in Bouches-du-Rhône
(France 2)

Tested in 25 departments, the “carte Vitale” application, which allows access to information without using a physical card, has gained many followers. Report from Bouches-du-Rhône.

What if your Vitale card was accessible from your smartphone? The device is currently being tested in 25 French departments, including Bouches-du-Rhône. From now on, pharmacists can access the patient’s file from the “Vitale card” mobile application.

“Patients often forget their Vitale card at home […] but today no one goes out without their smartphone”notes Bilel Kabouh, pharmacist, who finds this novelty “very practical”. Abandoning the plastic Vitale card for digital, the idea seems to appeal to the people of Marseille. In one month, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, more than 40,000 insured people have already activated their card on their phone.

Despite concerns, a health insurance specialist assures us that this method is safer than the physical card. Dematerialization should be extended to the whole of France in 2025.
