A record dating back to 1900 | The White Sox suffer a 120th defeat

(San Diego) The Chicago White Sox tied the Major League Baseball record for most losses in a season since 1900 on Sunday.

The White Sox conceded a 120e defeat to tie the 1962 New York Mets after the San Diego Padres triumphed 4-2 thanks to a three-run eighth inning.

The White Sox (36-120) took a 2-1 lead on home runs by Korey Lee and Miguel Vargas off Yu Darvish, but that lead evaporated in the eighth inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. capped the comeback with a home run.

The loss came a day after the White Sox tied the American League’s record of 119 losses, set by the Detroit Tigers in 2003.

The Cleveland Spiders, in 1899, held the absolute record in Major League Baseball with 134 defeats (20-134).

The Padres (90-66) posted their first 90-win season since 2010. At that time, they missed the playoffs despite going 90-72 because of a September collapse.

The Padres are now just one win away from making the playoffs for the third time since 2020.
