Italy | AS Roma CEO resigns after firing coach De Rossi

(Rome) AS Roma general manager Lina Souloukou tendered her resignation on Sunday, four days after firing coach Daniele De Rossi, a decision that sparked anger among the club’s fans.

“AS Roma announces that its general manager Lina Souloukou has presented her resignation. We thank Lisa for her investment in a particularly critical phase for the club and we wish her the best for her future professional challenges,” said the Roma press release, published a few hours before the match against Udinese (6 p.m.) at the Olympic Stadium on behalf of the 5e Italian Championship day.

“The owners remain fully focused on the development and success of Roma, constantly keeping in mind the values that make our club so special,” the text concludes.

Former Olympiakos manager Lina Souloukou was appointed head of Roma in April 2023.

According to the Italian press, she had been suspended by the club’s American owners, which would have triggered her resignation.

The manager was the target of a revolt by the tifosi, some of whom had planned to go on strike this Sunday, since the announcement of De Rossi’s dismissal after only four matches.

Three months after signing a three-year contract, De Rossi, a former iconic player of the club, revered by the tifosi, who succeeded José Mourinho in January 2024, was thanked after a disappointing start to the season with only three points in four games.

Relations between De Rossi and Souloukou had also deteriorated considerably over the summer and a transfer window in which the coach had no say in certain arrivals.

De Rossi has been replaced by Croatian Ivan Juric, who has spent the last three seasons in charge of Torino.
