Typhoon Yagi death toll climbs to 384, 89 missing

Floods and severe weather caused by Typhoon Yagi have killed 384 people in Myanmar, while 89 people are missing, the ruling junta announced on Saturday, September 21. More than a week ago, the typhoon passed through Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar, causing floods and landslides that have killed hundreds in total in the four countries. The floods have particularly exacerbated the precariousness in Myanmar, where millions of people have been displaced by more than three years of conflict between rebels and junta forces since the military seized power in a 2021 coup.

According to the UN, 887,000 people in the country were affected by the typhoon. “The worst-hit areas remain devastated, with widespread destruction of homes, property, water sources and electrical infrastructure.”the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Saturday. “Roads, bridges, communication networks, schools, public services, places of worship, crops and farmland have been severely damaged or completely destroyed”added Ocha.
