(Los Angeles) The creators of the game Cards Against Humanity are suing Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX for illegally logging land it owns on the Texas-Mexico border.
Known for their provocative card game, they filed a lawsuit Thursday seeking $15 million from the billionaire’s company, which allegedly stored “gravel, tractors and space junk” on the plot.
“Elon Musk’s SpaceX was building a space thing nearby and they figured they could dump their shit on our beautiful land without asking,” the game’s creators explain on a website created to accompany their complaint.
“After we caught them in the act, SpaceX gave us a 12-hour ultimatum to accept a paltry offer of less than half the value of our land,” they added.
They declined, then filed a lawsuit in Texas.
This land adjoins the border with Mexico. It had been purchased by Cards Against Humanity in 2017 to prevent the construction of the anti-migrant wall erected at the time by Donald Trump.
The company acquired it through thousands of $15 donations in a crowdfunding campaign.
“Some 150,000 people gave us their hard-earned money and in return we swore to protect this land from racist billionaires and their futile and stupid schemes,” the creators explain on the website.
“We have promised to use every legal tool at our disposal to protect this land from bullies like Trump and Musk,” who supports the Republican’s run for the White House, the creators insist.
According to them, all supporters of the initial campaign will receive up to $100 each if Cards Against Humanity wins the case.
Based on the principle of the exquisite corpse, this Anglo-Saxon board game asks players to complete a sentence, thanks to the irreverent suggestions suggested by the cards they draw. It was adapted into French under the name of Coconut Blancmange.
Contacted by AFP, SpaceX did not immediately respond.
