Faced with intense drought and the difficulty of feeding part of the population, the Zimbabwean authorities have just taken the decision to slaughter 200 elephants. Explanations.
Elephants are the symbol of Southern Africa. On their land, they reign majestically. But for how much longer? The El Niño climate phenomenon has triggered an unprecedented drought and famine that is decimating populations. In Zimbabwe, the authorities have decided to slaughter 200 elephants to feed the inhabitants.
“We will give meat to vulnerable people, the elderly, men, women, the most fragile people.“We are in dire need of food aid,” said Tinashe Farawo, a spokeswoman for Zimbabwe’s Parks and Wildlife Authority. The UN estimates that six million people will need food aid between November and March, when food is at its scarcest. The country has 100,000 elephants, the second largest population in the world, according to the authorities.
