September 21 marks World Alzheimer’s Day. Among the solutions proposed by doctors to relieve patients, there is equine therapy, a method that consists of putting the patient in the presence of horses.

Brushing, petting: the first contact with the horse is essential and requires great concentration for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. They stimulate their memory every week thanks to horses.

A session that Bertrand Last wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world. Suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, he explains the benefits that equine therapy brings him: “We always pet the horse at the beginning, and afterwards, it’s really nice.”. Accompanied by his wife Brigitte, who has been helping him for four years, the outing allows them to break away from isolation. It is important to have a very specific activity otherwise, at home, he does not always know what to do, and there, he has a goal in the day” she explains.

Alzheimer’s not only attacks memory, but also motor skills. Riding a horse then becomes a challenge. For Antoine Bertrand, who suffers from the disease, riding a horse easily has become a challenge.Today he has to remember how to throw his right leg over the horse’s body. He eventually gets the hang of it, but it takes some effort.”explains an equine therapist.
