The European Commission has recommended that member states increase smoke-free zones and include e-cigarettes in the ban.
Will smoking soon be banned on café or restaurant terraces? This is in any case a recommendation from the European Commission, which aims to better protect people against the effects of tobacco and smoke. The reaction of customers on the terrace is mixed. “I am totally against the ban on smoking on terraces because it is a question of freedom. And I don’t see who it could bother,” estimates a customer. Also concerned, electronic cigarettes and other derivatives.
A cafe owner says he is torn, he has seen the difference since the law was introduced in 2008. “It will always be a brake on trade”says the manager of one cafe. In another cafe, the owner considers the recommendation excessive. “We’ve never had any problems with smokers on the terrace,” she assures.
