Bad night for French women’s football. In the play-offs to reach the Champions League, Paris FC and Paris Saint-Germain lost their first leg on Wednesday, September 18. Away to Turin, the PSG players were favorites against Juventus, but had a very bad operation (1-3). The Danish Amalie Vangsgaard, transferred to Turin this summer, quickly surprised her former teammates (7th). Even if Thiniba Samoura equalized almost immediately (12th) with a curling shot into the top corner, the French were too lax defensively.

Despite numerous offensives, notably with Marie-Antoinette Katoto at the helm, Paris Saint-Germain never managed to find the back of the net, unlike Sofia Cantore (34th) and Hanna Bennison (60th), who ended up sealing the fate of the match. PSG will have to make up its two-goal deficit next week in the return match next Thursday at the Poissy campus.

If PSG can still dream of qualifying, the equation seems almost impossible for Paris FC. Sandrine Soubeyrand’s players took on water against Manchester City (0-5). Against the reigning English vice-champions, the French held out for half an hour before Vivianne Miedema (36th), Jessica Park (38th and 58th), Mary Fowler (49th) and Chloe Kelly (79th) took control of the match. With this rout at home, Paris FC has almost lost any chance of playing in the group stage of the Champions League, for which Lyon has already qualified.
