In Springfield, Ohio, at least one in six residents is of Haitian origin. A practicing Christian community that loves to pray while singing. In a church, the sermons are listened to by the faithful who need to be reassured. Haitians who live in the United States legally, but who are afraid. “I can’t tell you how scared and anxious they are. All of these worries could go away if people would just admit that they have been misinformed.”explains Carl Ruby, the pastor.
The source of these concerns was Donald Trump’s false intervention during the debate with Kamala Harris: “In Springfield, they eat the dogs. The people who came in eat the cats, the pets of the people. That’s what’s happening in our country.” Since then, the daily lives of the residents have changed. Threats and insults towards the community have never been so significant.
