Defenseman Chris Wideman announced his retirement from professional hockey on Tuesday, ending a six-year career in the National Hockey League that included the last two with the Montreal Canadiens.
The Canadiens management announced the news in a press release, accompanied by a letter intended for the club’s supporters, published on the team’s website.
In this letter, the 34-year-old American explains his reasons and shows his gratitude towards those who helped him develop in the NHL.
“After careful consideration, I have decided that it is best for my health and the future of my family to retire from professional hockey. I have made numerous attempts at rehabilitation, therapy and various treatments, but it has become clear that a return to play was not possible,” he wrote, on the eve of the start of the Canadiens’ regular training camp.
“While this is a difficult day for me,” Wideman added, “it is also a day of reflection and gratitude. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to live out my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League.”
