The Prime Minister will delay the presentation of the 2025 budget to the National Assembly by eight days. He has promised to send a letter to the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Éric Coquerel, on the subject. What are the next steps?
The 2025 budget will be Michel Barnier’s first major political test. With his late appointment, the new Prime Minister plans to present his draft budget to the Assembly not on October 1, as is customary, but on the 9th. This delay is denounced by the opposition, starting with the president of the Assembly’s Finance Committee, Éric Coquerel. The latter is demanding the first information from Matignon.
These ceiling letters, which forecast spending for each ministry, are normally sent in August. “The worst part of this is that we know that there is a budget that was prepared this summer.”denounces Éric Coquerel. He threatened to go in person to Matignon to obtain the first arbitrations on Tuesday, September 17.
The budget project in question was prepared during the summer by Gabriel Attal, who planned 16 billion in savings via a reduction in credits for work and health, and an increase for health or sports. Michel Barnier, for his part, is thinking about more tax justice, while Les Républicains have set red lines.
