He even got a birthday cake emoji. The British royal family sent their best birthday wishes to Prince Harry on Sunday, September 15, who had not received such attention since 2021 due to tensions with Buckingham. A first message was published on the official family account, with this sentence: “We wish the Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!”

These wishes were followed by another, equally terse message, published on the X account of Prince William and his wife, Princess Kate. To find traces of such public pleasantries, we have to go back to 2021, the year in which Prince Harry and his wife Meghan claimed that a member of the royal family had wondered, when Meghan was pregnant, about the skin color of their son Archie. The final blow came in early 2023 with the publication of the prince’s autobiography, which was very critical of the royal family.

As a sign of these tensions, the last public appearance between Prince Harry and his brother William dates back to September 2022, for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The new forty-year-old had seen his father, Charles III, very briefly in February 2024, when the king’s cancer was announced.

On Sunday, Prince Harry celebrates his birthday in California with his two children and his wife. The couple has been living there since 2020. “I was anxious at 30, I’m enthusiastic at 40”the prince said in a statement to the BBC on Friday, without making any mention of his family.
