A nice double whammy. Starting from second place on the grid, Oscar Piastri knew how to seize his chance perfectly just before the halfway point of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday 15 September. The McLaren driver overtook the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), who had started from pole position. The Australian never relinquished the lead of the race. At 23, Oscar Piastri is having a brilliant summer, with a second victory, after the one acquired in Hungary on July 21. Combined with the fantastic comeback of his teammate Lando Norris (4th), this result allows the McLaren team to take the lead in the constructors’ standings from Red Bull (476 points against 456).
Behind Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc, Mercedes driver George Russell took an unexpected third place, benefiting from the accident between Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) who were fighting for the podium in front of him. On the penultimate lap, the two drivers collided during an attempt to overtake and both ended up in the wall, triggering the virtual safety car procedure until the end of the race. For his part, the three-time reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished the Grand Prix in the same place as he started it (6th), without ever having enough speed to play at the front. He still has a 59-point lead over Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings. Alpine’s Frenchmen, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, finished 12th and 15th.
