On Tuesday night, millions of people were watching TV. Why? To watch Kamala Harris and Donald Trump face off in a debate for the very first time. The pressure was on for both candidates who are running for president of the United States, and who are tied in the polls. Who won? Here’s a rundown of their performances.
Kamala Harris
Upon her arrival on stage, the Democratic Party candidate stepped forward to shake Donald Trump’s hand. A gesture that seemed to surprise her opponent. We immediately felt that the relationship was tense between the two.
Then, in her introduction, Kamala Harris warned the audience about Trump: “You’re going to hear the same old, tired rhetoric, full of lies, complaints and insults.”
She ran in opposition to him: she pointed out that she comes from a middle-class family, while Trump grew up in luxury. She promised to be the president of all Americans, while Trump emphasizes what divides the population.
Kamala Harris also attacked Donald Trump on several issues. Among other things, she listed his numerous lawsuits. Donald Trump responded by claiming that all his troubles with the law were orchestrated by Mrs. Harris’ party.
Donald Trump
The Republican candidate did not cause any surprises during the evening. He repeated the same insults and insisted a lot on the subject of immigration. For example, he claimed that millions of criminals had entered the United States illegally since he was no longer president.
Kamala Harris managed to get him angry a few times. One was when she said world leaders were making fun of Donald Trump. The Republican got angry and the hosts had a hard time bringing him back to order.
Some of his surprising claims were quickly corrected by the debate moderators. Donald Trump said, for example, that immigrants eat cats and dogs. Which is false.
In conclusion, Donald Trump recalled that Kamala Harris has been working in the White House for four years and is the current vice president of the United States. Why, he asked, has she not already fulfilled her promises?
Verdict: Harris 1 — Trump 0
Most major media outlets have claimed that Kamala Harris won the debate. Will this impact her chances of being elected? One thing is for sure, she won a very important endorsement at the end of the debate: singer Taylor Swift, who announced on Instagram that she was endorsing Kamala Harris. What a night!
