CFL | Tiger-Cats beat Red and Black 37-21

(Hamilton) Bo Levi Mitchell threw two touchdown passes and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats upset the Ottawa Redblacks 37-21 on Saturday afternoon.


Mitchell completed 20 of 27 passes for 299 yards and was intercepted once to lead the Tiger-Cats (4-9) to their second straight victory.

Hamilton came within six points of the Toronto Argonauts (7-6), the Felines’ rivals, on Friday night.

A 15-yard rushing touchdown by Greg Bell and a two-point conversion at 11:30 of the fourth quarter gave the Tiger-Cats a 37-21 lead.

Reserve Jeremiah Masoli had given the Red and Blacks two touchdowns before that sequence. He connected with Andre Miller for 13 yards, then Dominique Rhymes for 10 yards. A two-point conversion by Khalan Laborn made it 29-21.

The Red and Black could have qualified for the playoffs with a victory.

The Ottawa team will return home next Saturday to host the Montreal Alouettes.

The Red and Black did not help themselves at all with six turnovers, including three interceptions and two fumbles.

Dru Brown completed 17 of 27 passes for 164 yards and one interception before being replaced by Masoli late in the third quarter.

Lawrence Woods III, Steven Dunbar Jr. and Ante Litre scored the Tiger-Cats’ touchdowns. Marc Liegghio had two field goals, three converts and two singles.

Lewis Ward made two field goals and a convert for the Red and Black.

It was the annual Hall of Fame game.

SJ Green, Chad Owens, Weston Dressler, Vince Goldsmith and Vince Coleman along with builders Ray Jauch and Ed Laverty were honored at the half. They were inducted Friday night.
