Former producer Harvey Weinstein, in prison in New York for rape, is facing new charges, according to revelations from several American media outlets including CBS and NBC, which cite prosecutors. These charges, the content of which is not yet public, were issued by a New York grand jury during a hearing on Thursday, September 12. Aged 72, Harvey Weinstein, hospitalized during the night from Saturday to Sunday for an operation, did not attend this hearing. These new charges will be formally notified to him in court when he is fit to appear.

Harvey Weinstein will also be retried after an appeals court overturned his 2020 conviction in New York in April for the 2013 rape of actress Jessica Mann and the 2006 sexual assault of production assistant Mimi Haleyi. The reversal was seen as an affront and a step backward for the #MeToo movement, launched with the Weinstein affair, against sexual and gender-based violence against women.

The revelations in 2017 about the sexual assaults of the former boss of Miramax had triggered a global shockwave and freed the speech of many victims. More than 80 women accused him of harassment, sexual assault or rape, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Judd. Harvey Weinstein has always maintained that sexual relations were consensual.
