(SPECIAL ENVOY / FRANCE 2)

Dengue fever cases are increasing in France, transmitted by tiger mosquitoes that have already colonized 78 departments. How can we stop their progression and limit the risks of an epidemic?

Eleven cases of dengue fever in the Var, nine others in Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes in the Vaucluse. At the end of August 2024, dengue fever, a disease that was previously tropical, struck France. The culprit? A small winged insect, striped in black and white, that bites discreetly: the tiger mosquito. A cousin of our good old mosquito, which arrived from Asia only twenty years ago.

Since then, the tiger mosquito has rapidly colonized 78 French departments and is progressing month by month. It invades gardens as far as Brittany and can transmit dengue fever, the Zika virus or chikungunya… Diseases that, until now, could not be caught in our latitudes.

In 2023, 45 people were infected with dengue fever in France without even having traveled abroad. Faced with this health threat, how are the Ministry of Health agents trying to stem the spread of the tiger mosquito and limit the risks of an epidemic?

How can we act to limit its proliferation? “Envoyé spécial” explains how to fight against this creature and reveals which products are really effective for protecting yourself from it.

A report by Violaine Vermot-Gaud, Matthieu Hauville, Sarah Lerch, Mathilde Rougeron, Julie Martin, Bruno Auzet, Samuel Sahki and Manon Martin broadcast in “Envoyé spécial” on September 12, 2024.
