“The Count of Monte Cristo” exceeds 8 million admissions at the French box office

The film starring Pierre Niney is one of four films pre-selected to represent France at the next Oscars.

The adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, with Pierre Niney in the role of Edmond Dantès, is still at the top of the French box office with over 8 million admissions, followed by Emilia Perez And Nevermore – It Ends With Usaccording to CBO Box-Office data as of Wednesday, September 11.

For its eleventh week of release, the feature film by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière continues to seduce the public, with 357,154 new admissions, which further establishes its status as one of the biggest successes of the year in France.

The Count of Monte Cristo is also one of the four films pre-selected to represent France at the Oscars in March 2025, the National Cinema Center (CNC) announced on Wednesday.

By passing the 8 million admissions mark since its arrival in theaters, it surpasses the number of spectators of the 1955 version with Jean Marais (7.8 million), according to CBO data.

In second place, Jacques Audiard’s musical comedy Emilia Perezwinner of the Jury Prize at the last Cannes Film Festival and the collective Best Actress Award for Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and the transgender lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón, attracted more than 188,000 spectators, or around 637,000 admissions in three weeks. This film is also one of the four French feature films shortlisted for the Oscars in March 2025.

Just behind appears Nevermore – It Ends With Usbased on the best-selling book by American writer Colleen Hoover, by and starring Justin Baldoni, with Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) as the headliner, which had a similar number of admissions last week and passed the million spectator mark in one month.

New in theaters, the comedy Old fashionedwith the duo Gerard Darmon and Didier Bourdon, made its way into the Top 5 of the ranking with 120,739 entries.

Weekly box office from September 4 to 10:

1. The Count of Monte Cristo : 357,154 admissions on 735 screens (8,059,216 admissions in 11 weeks)

2. Emilia Perez : 188,453 admissions on 625 screens (637,268 in 3 weeks)

3. Nevermore – It Ends With Us : 188,393 admissions on 600 screens (1,050,206 admissions in 4 weeks)

4. Old fashioned : 120,739 entries on 511 screens (new)

5. Deadpool & Wolverine : 114,376 admissions on 492 screens (3,556,288 admissions in 7 weeks)
