Cooking an omelet or baking a cake could soon cost more, because of the price of eggs. Farmers can no longer absorb the cost of transport, energy and feed for chickens, and are asking the mass distribution sector to pass these increases on to the shelves.

Customers of some supermarkets have already noticed the increase in egg prices, which is expected to become widespread soon. This is yet another increase for consumers. “If it is to pay the farmers directly and it goes directly into their pocket, I agree.“Says one of them. However, many find themselves overwhelmed by the price increase, which comes on top of that of several resources, such as butter.

It would take at least an increase of 12 cents per box of six eggs to compensate for the increase in food. In Essonne, a couple of breeders have been sounding the alarm for weeks. The price of food has soared. “The finished price of my food is 390 euros per tonne. It’s 150 euros more than usual. It’s huge, on our scale“, says Hervé Hardy, breeder. Every day, he has to feed his 250 laying hens.
