He had been acquitted at first instance but the Islamologist Tariq Ramadan was sentenced on appeal in Switzerland to a three-year prison sentence, including one year in prison, the Geneva justice system announced on Tuesday 10 September. The criminal appeal and review chamber recognised this “guilty of rape and sexual coercion for almost all of the facts reported”explained the Geneva court of justice, confirming information from Swiss public television RTS. The decision dated August 28 is subject to appeal within 30 days.

“These events occurred in Geneva on the night of 28 to 29 October 2008, the date on which the complainant was raped and subjected to sexual acts.”adds the Swiss justice system. The appeal trial was held in Geneva at the end of May. The prosecutor had requested a three-year prison sentence, half of which would be firm. The Swiss Islamologist is also the target of a case in France. In June, theThe Paris Court of Appeal has confirmed the referral of Tariq Ramadan to the departmental criminal court for three of the four rapes reported, which were allegedly committed between 2009 and 2016.
