A big blow for a selection in full doubt. The American Football Federation announced, Tuesday, September 10, the arrival of Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino at the head of the men’s national team. The former Chelsea coach, where he had been on the bench for a season, will replace Gregg Berhalter, sacked in July after the elimination of the American team in the group stage of the Copa America. This early exit in a home edition was a stain two years before the World Cup co-organized by Uncle Sam’s country, Mexico and Canada.

“Mauricio is a serial winner who has a deep passion for player development and a proven ability to build cohesive, competitive teams,” justified Matt Crocker, the sports director of the American Federation. “His results speak for themselves and I am convinced that he is the best choice to exploit the immense potential of our talented team,” he continued.

No details on the length of his contract were given, but Mauricio Pochettino will be expected to lead the team at the next World Cup. “I see a group of players full of talent and potential, and together we will build something special that the whole nation can be proud of,” reacted the technician, who was at the head of Paris Saint-Germain for a season and a half (January 2021-July 2022). Mauricio Pochettino is the second non-American to be appointed to this position, after the German Jürgen Klinsmann, who left in 2016.
