An explosion caused by the collision between a tanker and a truck carrying passengers and livestock has killed at least 59 people in Nigeria, authorities said Monday, September 9. The collision occurred on the night of Saturday to Sunday, shortly after midnight, on a road in the Agaie region, in the north of Niger, Africa’s most populous country.
Ibrahim Husseini, spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), told AFP that “The death toll rises to 59” and that “New victims could be discovered as the evacuation of the accident site continues.”The victims were buried immediately after the accident on Sunday, as is customary in the northern Muslim state, he said.
Accidents are common on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads, largely due to speeding and disregard for traffic laws. A crane and a van were also involved in the accident, and about 50 cows were burned alive. In the third quarter of 2023, Niger ranked fifth among the states most affected by road accidents, particularly due to speeding, according to the Federal Road Safety Commission.
