New government: The Republicans received at Matignon
New government: The Republicans received at Matignon
(France 2)

After the appointment of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister, what government would be able to resist parliamentary censure? Elements of an answer.

It is his prerogative but also perhaps his burden: now that he is Prime Minister, Michel Barnier must compose his government, but with whom? The first option for him is also the most natural: to choose right-wing personalities from his party, Les Républicains. Among the possible cards in Michel Barnier’s hand: the one who could have been in his place, Xavier Bertrand, but also Jean-François Copé, David Lisnard and Aurélien Pradié.

The LR, who this morning, when leaving Matignon, asked Michel Barnier a question: will he be a collaborating or full-time Prime Minister? This will also be one of the keys to forming this government: what is the balance of power between Emmanuel Macron and Michel Barnier? Will the president try to impose names on him? For example, on his reserved areas, foreign affairs or defense? He knows that it is impossible to form a stable government without also reaching an agreement with the presidential camp.
