Submerged for 45 years and the construction of an artificial lake nearby, the Greek village of Kallio has reappeared. The drought has drastically lowered the water level. A situation that greatly worries the capital Athens, dependent on this water reservoir.
A Greek village has emerged from the waters. Its submerged buildings have been given new life. The ruins of 80 houses and a school are now visible. Seashells have replaced the inhabitants. The church could also reappear soon. Located 200 kilometers from Athens, the village of Kallio was evacuated and then submerged when an artificial lake was built nearby 45 years ago.
But the water is gradually evaporating. On the banks, layers of sediment are appearing one by one. After a very dry winter and one of the hottest summers in history, the level of this artificial reservoir has dropped by 35 metres in two years. “The lake level has dropped dramatically because it hasn’t rained. It’s been a few years now. (…) The water table has dropped. So we have a big problem.”warns Konstantinos Koutsoumbas, deputy mayor of Dorida. This reservoir is the main water reservoir of the capital, whose region could soon suffer from a lack of water.
