The suspense is over. After 55 days of negotiations, Michel Barnier was appointed Prime Minister by Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, September 5. The former minister and European Commissioner, from the Republicans party, which has only 47 MPs, must now form a government.

The task may prove difficult in the face of an Assembly divided into three forces. On the left, the members of the New Popular Front, the leading force in the chamber with 193 deputies, are indignant at a “denial of democracy”. On the far right, the National Rally says it is waiting for the general policy speech to decide on a potential censure of the new executive. Generally speaking, political reactions are mixed.
