37 people have already died trying to cross the Channel in 2024, following the tragedy that occurred on Tuesday, September 3. While the number of boats is increasing, they are also made more dangerous by police pressure and barricaded access.

Migrants are trying everything to cross the Channel, crammed in their dozens onto canoes inflatable boats at the risk of their lives. These images are becoming more and more frequent. From a few hundred in 2018, arrivals in Great Britain by small boats have exploded in 2022: more than 45,000. A record that could well be broken in 2024. 13,000 arrivals were recorded in the first half of the year and with the summer, the pace accelerated.

Migrants are increasingly turning to small boats, as access to trucks or cruise ships crossing the Channel has been barricaded. Have the crossings become more dangerous for those who risk it? With the shipwreck that occurred on Tuesday, September 3, at least 37 people have lost their lives in the Channel this year. A tragic record that can be explained, according to migrant defense associations, by the pressure of police patrols.
