Nighttime strike on Lviv leaves at least seven dead, authorities say

At least seven people, including three children, were killed and more than thirty others were injured in a Russian strike on Lviv on the night of Tuesday 3 to Wednesday 4 September, according to a new report released by the city’s mayor on Telegram and the Interior Ministry. Several residential buildings in this large city in western Ukraine were hit, local authorities report. The day after the deadly strike on Poltava, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denounced “Russian terrorist strikes”. At least 51 people were killed and 271 injured on Tuesday in a Russian missile strike on the central Ukrainian city of Poltava, which partially destroyed a military institute. Regional Governor Filip Pronin added that “Up to 18 people could be under the rubble”.

Joe Biden condemns “deplorable” Russian attack. The attack on the city of Poltava “is a tragic reminder of Putin’s constant and outrageous attempts to break the will of a free people”the American president said in a statement, assuring that the United States “will continue” to support Ukrainians, “including by providing them with the air defence systems and capabilities they need to protect their country”.

Series of resignations ahead of new Ukrainian government reshuffle. At least six Ukrainian politicians, including ministers, resigned on Tuesday, and a presidential aide was fired earlier. The head of Ukrainian diplomacy announced his resignation on Wednesday. “As promised, a major government reshuffle can be expected this week”said Tuesday evening David Arakhamia, the leader of the ruling party’s parliamentarians. President Volodymyr Zelensky will thus try to strengthen confidence in his team, at a time when the country is facing many challenges, including daily Russian bombings.
