“Warrant Officer Eric Comyn, the homeland is eternally grateful to you,” declared the resigning Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, on Monday afternoon in Nice.

In the courtyard of the Ausseur barracks in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), France paid tribute on Monday, September 2, to Eric Comyn, a 54-year-old gendarme killed on August 26 by a motorist trying to escape a traffic stop. After a speech, the resigning Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, promoted the warrant officer to the rank of chief warrant officer, “as an exception”.

“You are cited in the order of the national gendarmerie – awarding the gendarmerie medal – and decorated with the internal security medal”he added. Finally, “In the name of the President of the Republic, we will decorate you with the military medal and make you a knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honor.”

“Warrant Officer Eric Comyn, the homeland is eternally grateful to you (…). Leave in peace after having served so much.”concluded Gérald Darmanin, before placing the decorations on the gendarme’s coffin, covered with the tricolor flag.
