The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team had its best offensive performance since the start of the Paris Paralympic Games on Sunday, winning 81-49 over Spain.
The Canadians imposed their pace from the first moments of the match to give themselves a 21-14 advantage after one quarter. Michèle Sung’s team did not slow down after that and increased their lead to 41-26 at the half.
The Canadian team never had to look back in the second half of the game, en route to its second victory of the Paralympic tournament.
“The atmosphere was electrifying today at the Bercy Arena. It’s a great team victory, everyone contributed, the crowd and the players on the bench were loud. We had a lot of fun,” commented Quebecer Élodie Tessier after the game.
British Columbian Kadry Dandeneau was once again the spark plug in the Canadian clan with her 36-point haul. Cindy Ouellet also stood out with her 14 points.
Élodie Tessier and Rosalie Lalonde also registered on the score sheet with 4 and 2 points respectively.
For her part, Sofia Fassi Fehri saw action at the Paralympic Games during this match against Spain. The Montrealer recovered an offensive rebound in just over 5 minutes of play.
The win puts the Canadians in second place in Group B, just behind China. They will move on to the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
At the 2023 World Championships in Dubai, the Spanish defeated the Canadians by a score of 70-65 in the preliminary round. For the Canadians, there was no question of being played the same trick in Paris.
“We followed our game plan to the letter and we lived in the moment. That’s what made the difference. We’re going to the quarter-finals and we’re pumped up,” concluded Tessier.
The Canadians’ opponents for the quarter-finals will be known after the Group A duels on Monday.
