Dominican Republic | Truck crashes into bar, killing at least 11 people

(San Juan) A truck plowed into a bar in the Dominican Republic early Sunday, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 40, authorities said.

The accident occurred in the southern city of Azua, west of the capital, Santo Domingo, Juan Salas, the director of civil defense, told The Associated Press.

One of the victims was a police sergeant, police spokesman Diego Pesqueira said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, although authorities were examining cameras in the area, Salas said.

Mr Pesqueira added that the truck driver fled the scene and was not found. He said, however, that police arrested a passenger in the truck, who was carrying fruit.

Most of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital, with four in critical condition, National Health Service spokeswoman Shaira Castillo said. The injured are women aged 17 to 45 and men aged 18 to 55.
