Back to school | Life on the big screen

Life imitates art as much as it inspires it. These films about five very different people are further proof of that.

Lee

American model turned photographer Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) covered World War II for the magazine Vogue. The production of this film about a woman’s fight to play a role during the armed conflict seems to have been fraught with similar pitfalls. In an interview, Kate Winslet, also a producer, mentioned having been the victim of sexism in financing the film. Directed by Ellen Kuras (The Umbrella Academy, Ozark), the feature film is inspired by the book The Lives of Lee Millerwritten by the latter’s son, Antony Penrose, played by Josh O’Connor. His father is played by Alexander Skarsgård, while Marion Cotillard and Andrea Riseborough play the editors of Vogue France and England, respectively.
