According to UNICEF, the number of children on the streets has increased by 120% compared to 2020. A worrying figure given that the government had made commitments to this effect in 2022.

A few days before the start of the school year, thousands of children are still sleeping on the streets in France. On the night of August 19 to 20, 2,043 children found themselves homeless, including 467 under the age of three. An alarming situation revealed on Thursday, August 29 by UNICEF, which is concerned about a constant increase in these figures. Up 3% compared to last year and up 120% compared to 2020.

The UN agency is questioning the government’s policy. The state has an obligation to find accommodation for the homeless. But emergency centres are overflowing. Families are then left to fend for themselves, with disastrous consequences for children, in terms of health and education. In 2022, the government had nevertheless committed to no longer having children on the streets.
