The ultra-popular darling of American pop Taylor Swift has yet to take a stand in the US presidential election that will take place in November. But among her fans, nicknamed the “Swifties”, one group has taken the lead, fully behind Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

The “Swifties for Kamala” group, launched on Tuesday, August 27, during a virtual meeting by videoconference attended by 27,000 people, had a clear objective: “transform our swiftie power into political power.” The group claimed more than $114,000 in donations.

Since US President Joe Biden withdrew from the campaign on July 21, four months before the presidential election, support groups for the new Democratic candidate Kamala Harris have flourished on the internet, but that of the “Swifties” is one of the most prominent.

At the launch event, American singer and musician Carole King encouraged fans to campaign, as did Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren.I’m a swiftie, Taylor and I are friends (…) if any of you are thinking about getting involved, knocking on doors or making phone calls but are a little nervous (…) trust me: there is nothing to lose and everything to gain“, said Carole King, known for her songs I Feel The Earth Move And You’ve Got A Friend.

Here’s the situation. We have seventy days left until the election, and I’ll be honest, it’s going to be an uphill battle.“, declared Elizabeth Warren. We have a lot to do and there are only 24 hours in a day.

Launched by a fan of the singer, Emerald Medrano, the “Swifties for Kamala”, who have 72,000 subscribers on X and nearly 50,000 on Instagram, assure that they are not looking for a possible support from Taylor Swift. However, it must not have escaped their notice that Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota, is himself a self-proclaimed “swiftie”.When the global pop star visited the state on June 23 and 24, 2023, he even declared two days in her honor, “Taylor Swift Days.”

On its website, the Swifties for Kamala group advocates for the protection of LGBTQIA+ and reproductive rights, support for migrants, and serious consideration of climate change, as well as “that a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas“.

While Swift has not officially endorsed “Swifties for Kamal,” she is considered to lean Democratic. She supported Joe Biden in the 2020 US presidential election and has championed inclusive messages towards LGBT+ communities in her songs, as well as condemning the conservative-majority US Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the federal abortion guarantee in the US.

Considered one of the most powerful women in America, and feared as a major influence, with her 284 million followers on Instagram, Taylor Swift, 34, is regularly the target of conspiracy theories carried by the extreme right and supporters of Republican candidate Donald Trump, who even recently tried to make people believe that she supported them.
