A few days before the start of the school year, thousands of children are still sleeping on the streets in France. On the night of August 19 to 20, 2,043 children found themselves homeless, including 467 children under the age of three. An alarming situation revealed on Thursday, August 29 by Unicef France, which is concerned about a constant rise in these figures, with an increase of 3% since 2023 and 120% since 2020.
The UN agency is questioning the government’s policy, as the state has an obligation to find accommodation for the homeless, but emergency centres are overflowing. Families are then left to fend for themselves, with disastrous consequences for children in terms of health and education. In 2022, the government had nevertheless committed to ensuring that no more children would be on the streets.
