Two women have been charged with kidnapping a five-year-old child earlier this week in Brossard with the intention of sending him abroad.
Ruixue Yang, 65, of no known address in Canada, and Xin Wang, 48, a resident of Thornhill, Ont., appeared Wednesday morning at the Longueuil courthouse via videoconference from Ontario, where they were arrested Tuesday morning. The child had been found safe and sound in York, near Toronto.
They each face three charges: kidnapping with intent to sequester a child, kidnapping with intent to send a minor abroad and kidnapping against the will of the child’s legal guardian.
They should be brought to Quebec on Thursday morning for the continuation of criminal proceedings.
The Crown prosecutor on the case, Mr.e Bruno Des Lauriers objected Wednesday morning to their release. His position could be reviewed once he can speak with the lawyer or lawyers of the two women.
A publication ban prevents the child’s name from being released and Me Des Lauriers did not reveal whether there is a family connection between the child and the two accused.
The case will be called before a judge again on Thursday morning. The bail hearing should normally be held at that time, but the Crown prosecutor believes that the accused’s lawyers will probably not have had time to prepare: they did not yet have a Quebec lawyer Wednesday morning, and one of them had been unofficially assisted by an Ontario prosecutor for the appearance earlier in the morning.
In the case of a request for release in such a case, there is normally “a fairly voluminous amount of evidence, and it cannot be prepared in an hour on the corner of a table,” explained Mr.e Laurels.
