If the bulk sale was started to gain momentum, the health crisis has complicated the situation. Panic takes hold of the stores.

Pasta, rice, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios … All these products had their shelves in bulk in most stores. If this trend was indeed launched, the health crisis came to cut it in full flight, giving way to concern about unpackaged products. “The first confinement where it was new, we had to adapt so we did more traditional races”, testifies one of the customers of an organic store.

The store manager claims to have noticed a sharp decrease in activity in 2020 and 2021, compared to previous years. The bulk sector had grown by 40% in 2019, and is now stagnant at 1.32 billion euros in turnover. For some experts, there is a financial justification beyond the health crisis. “There is also the question of purchasing power and supply. It is a set of reasons”, says Yves Puget, editor-in-chief of LSA magazine.
