The president of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was on a visit to Kursk, Russia, on Tuesday, August 27, to tour the nuclear power plant. The plant is under heavy surveillance because it is located just a few kilometers from the fighting that is raging.

For weeks, the Russians have been accusing the Ukrainians of endangering the Kursk nuclear power plant, since their incursion into Russia. In Kurchatov, west of Kursk, where it is located, almost everyone works at the plant. The Ukrainian incursion into Russia is barely 30 km from the plant. The construction of the Kursk plant, without a protective dome, makes it more vulnerable to fire. The Russians even say that the debris of an intercepted drone fell nearby.

For the first time, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was able to inspect the plant on Tuesday, August 27. “All I’m saying is that a power plant of this type, with the technology we know, is 30 km from a combat zone.”explained Rafael Grossi. About ten kilometers south of the plant, satellite images show that the Russians have started digging a whole network of trenches.
