A luminous object was spotted in the sky, particularly above Alsace and Moselle, on Tuesday, August 27, around 9:30 p.m., report France Bleu Alsace and France Bleu Lorraine Nord. Dozens of Internet users subsequently posted photos and videos of this fiery trail on social networks.

It is neither a shooting star nor a meteor, but a satellite that disintegrated upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere, says Vigie-Ciel, a scientific program managed by researchers.

“The object that re-entered the atmosphere is a satellite of the Starlink constellation, numbered 2382”explains Vigie-Ciel on its website. There are more than 6,100 satellites in this constellation created by the American company SpaceX, led by Elon Musk. They are launched in salvos of several dozen by Falcon launchers.
